Internet Radio’s Demise

Posted by ryan as News, War on the Internet

“With the Copyright Royalty Board setting new rates for Internet radio broadcasters, analysts expect many small Net radio stations to go out of business. SomaFM, for example, said that it had paid about $22,000 in royalties in 2006, but that, under the new ruling, it would have to pay about $600,000 annually. SomaFM’s total annual revenue was about $200,000.”

This new media format must be controlled, and this is a good step in that direction. One step forward, two steps back. Don’t mistake me for someone who doesn’t believe that artists should get paid either. I don’t feel that way at all. We just need change the terms, adapt them the new world that the internet has provided.

Myspace End In Site?

Posted by ryan as News

You have to wonder. With new competitors every day, Can a company who is used to complete all out control move fast on its heals and change with the web? The past has proved otherwise. Myspace may have hit a peek point. I know that their popularity has reached a large audience because my sister has found out about the service and created her own page. Not that she isn’t becoming more web savy, but she definitely has been a great example and gage of small town America’s adoption of new media. Wired has weighed in on the topic as well, could there be troubling times ahead for Myspace? Is Facebook going to be the new Myspace or will sites like Virb with its sleek look take over the reigns of tomorrows social online user’s needs? http://www.virb.com
