Toledo Art Gallery Bozarts
Posted by ryan as Art
Its amazing to me that a gallery that is supporting graf artists has been unknown to me for as long as it has been open. From what I know its been since at least June. Since they don’t have a website that I can find I have no real clue. Its cool to see a local artist come out and represent.

Frames – DIY Style
Posted by ryan as Art, Painting
I’ve been keeping my eye on frames for awhile now. I purchase them here and there depending on the cost / value of the ones I encounter. I go to thrift stores because they usually have the best deals on old artwork that have great frames, or fixer-uppers. I even browser eBay for antique frames every now and then but lets face it, people on eBay are going to have the prices set about as high as any other place out there. Bottom line, its not the most ideal place to get a deal on frames. I have plenty of artwork in need of proper framing and hanging. So I started to think, I need an alternative. That’s when the search for DIY tutorials on making my own frames became the most likely option. Wow, there are great number of options out there. I’m now going to officially stop looking to eBay for frames.

So I’ve been neglecting this site recently. I have not forgotten about this site and plan to start posting often again real soon. I have some things in the works and when the time is right I will make it known publicly. Long story short I’ve moved on from my previous employer and opportunity is knocking. Good times people.

Sterling Hundley Illustration
Posted by ryan as Art, Illustration, Inspiring, Painting, Style
I come across so many talented artists, and its almost overwhelming the amount of talent out there. This site was going to be a site that featured many of these fine artists, but my lack of due diligence has left the blog posts nil on this and my delicious account very active. In an effort to change that though, here is a great and very talented illustrator named Sterling Hundley. His work is filled with great textures, patterns, and an excellent choice of color. I am impressed with a lot of his work. You should check out his site at www.sterlinghundley.com. Also check out his blog and get more information about his process and profession. He refers to his blog as Advice in his navigation so its going to be worth you while if you are interested in illustration and have a desire to learn.

Hey, show me your knits!
Posted by ryan as Art, Inspiring, Interweb, Style
Hey, show me your knits! is the blog of Breane Martin. I met here while living in L.A. She is pretty awesome and I could go on with the stories from that time but I would rather let her own site do the talking. She has a passion for knitting and music. Not a bad combo, so check out here site Hey, show me your knits!

Knits Going Down
So I just came across this cool musical animation that was created using “over 700 real world knits”. When you think about how easy it is to create this effect in a 3d application and well crafted texture map you have appreciate the soul put into this project. Its the kind of approach I back every time. Even the most cliche ideas will have a touch of originality when approached with a hand crafted approach. Not that I am suggesting the cure for the cliche is a simple approach. I’m just saying that I’ve seen it make the difference at times. A human touch can go a long way, and that ultimately is what you should take away from something as well done as this.

Dallas Clayton – Endless
Posted by ryan as Art, Career, Humor, Illustration, Inspiring, Skateboarding
I don’t know how many of my readers subscribe to The Skateboard Mag and skateboard for that matter, but if you don’t perhaps you should. At the very least you are going to get that message from this website. I always dig into The Mag right away when I receive it. I like to read all of the small articles first and then really dig into the interviews. The latest issue came in the mail two days ago, #62. The Guest Ed in the magazine this time is Dallas Clayton. He wrote a small page worth called Endless.
Dallas Clayton is a talented writer and his illustration style compliments his writings. I love what Endless is about. Its really good. Read that below. Also don’t miss Dallas’s great writings over at The Berrics. More Popular Than You is a great series he provides for their website www.theberrics.com.
ENDLESS
You should learn to skateboard.
It is cheap and fun.
It is something you can do when you are alone
or with friends.
Once you learn, you can hang out late at night in parking lots for hours and hours
(and you don’t even have to be high).
Also you can talk to others about skateboarding
and it will make them think you are cool
and they will give you things
like free stickers, or invitations to parties
with lots of guys at them.
If you get good
you can jump over all sorts of things
like cars, and European streets, and statues, and off small buildings.
and people will take pictures of you
which is nice (for later, to show your kids)
If you get really good,
maybe someone will pay you
to take pictures, and make videos of you jumping off all sorts of crap
and they will put you on billboards
and benches where homeless people sleep
and your name will be on thousands of pairs of shoes.
Maybe you will have a video game with you in it
or a TV show where you shoot your friends with weapons.
Or maybe not.
Maybe you will just keep doing it and no one will really care how good you are
and you will just use your skateboard to ride down the street
to buy some beer
when your “old lady” takes off with the car.
It’s up to you I guess.
Like anything else.
But you should definitely learn.
It will be worth it
in the long run.
I promise.

President Awesome
Posted by ryan as Art, Humor, Illustration, News
Here is the beginning of a comic blog that brings to the light the funny romanticism that has accompanied the recently elected President Obama. We all want so badly to have a leader that we can believe in, but seriously people lets get a realistic here. I’ve found this last election very interesting as its the first time I ever saw a politician entering the realm of “cool”. Every artist, musician, trend setter spouting out their love for a man they had no clue about only a few years back. Not to sit back and look at the president with glossy eyed love, Dean Trippe and Evan Bryce have started the blog and comic strip, President Awesome. Its in its infant stage just like the current president’s term so take note, bookmark this site and let the good times roll.

AP Wants A Peice Of The Obama Fairey Pie
Posted by ryan as Art
The LA Times reports that the Associated Press believes that it owns the rights to the imagery of Obama’s now famed Hope poster and wants compensation from Fairey for its use. However, Fairey disagrees with that notion. Its up to the courts ultimately. Did Fairey’s use of Obama’s photo taken by an AP photographer go too far? One thing can be sure, their picture alone would not have made it a success. Shepard’s style is what made it more, but is that enough? It can be debated, and I’m sure that it will.
The image, Fairey has acknowledged, is based on an Associated Press photograph taken in April 2006 by Mannie Garcia on assignment for the AP at the National Press Club in Washington. The AP says it owns the copyright, and wants credit and compensation. Fairey disagrees.
“The Associated Press has determined that the photograph used in the poster is an AP photo and that its use required permission,” AP’s director of media relations, Paul Colford, said in a statement. “AP safeguards its assets and looks at these events on a case-by-case basis. We have reached out to Mr. Fairey’s attorney and are in discussions. We hope for an amicable solution.”
I’d post the picture but I don’t have a bunch of money to pay the AP to show it on my blog. Really I could care less about their content. Keep it as far as I’m concerned. I also think that the AP can do a great job turning off a lot of young people with this court case. Don’t worry, I know its all about money. Protect your pockets AP.
2. Who owns The Associated Press?
The Associated Press is a not-for-profit cooperative, which means it is owned by its 1,500 U.S. daily newspaper members. They elect a board of directors that directs the cooperative.
UPDATE: According the The New York Times Shepard Fairey’s legal team is not taking this one lying down.
In a pre-emptive strike, the street artist Shepard Fairey filed a lawsuit on Monday against The Associated Press, asking a federal judge to declare that he is protected from copyright infringement claims in his use of a news photograph as the basis for a now ubiquitous campaign poster image of President Obama.
“If you put all the legal stuff away, I’m so proud of the photograph and that Fairey did what he did artistically with it, and the effect it’s had.†– AP freelance photographer, Mannie Garcia

Beatbox Remix
Posted by ryan as Advertising, Art
So a friend of mine hipped me to the creative editing of Lasse Gjertsen. Check out how some simple individual beats can become music to a creative editor.
After seeing this I understood where the beat box commercial that Always Sunny In Philadelphia got their inspiration. Good stuff.
