Custom Layout Per Post

Posted by ryan as Interweb, Web Devlopment, ryanshull.com

Netuts sent out an e-mail today about Bringing The Magazine To The Web. It was a great article that talked about designing custom layouts for each post that reflected the article’s content. It is a great write up and I agree with many of the sentiments. One of the links within the article was Smashing Magazine’s article The Death Of The Blog Post. It too went into depth about the same issue. One quote made about blogging that made me think about my own site is about failing to meet one’s own expectations and the neglect of a blog. Now I personally don’t neglect my blog out of frustration. I do enough web development to know that change is constant. If something doesn’t work change it so that it does. The reason I neglect my blog is that I am too busy trying to do fine art, photography, and skateboarding. Excuses, excuses I know.  For me its about balance. I need the time away from the web to recharge and grow as an artist.

Bloggers often lack the motivation to keep their blog running. Many of them feel they have to keep it fresh by updating it every day, and failing to meet their own expectations results in both frustration and a neglected blog.
Updating a blog daily isn’t ideal, and more often than not…

seven half-hearted articles a week does not equal one very polished, interesting article.

What Is A Browser?

Posted by ryan as Interweb, Technology, Web Devlopment

It both amazes me on some levels that people don’t know what a browser is, and on the other hand makes perfect sense. It really explains why the education process for my job with clients is so crucial. For the record, this is hosted by Google and they love it when people do not know the difference between a search engine and a browser. What a great opportunity for them to capitalize on the the general public’s’ ignorance and get them using their browser Chrome. Which coincidentally is based off of webkit, the open source browser being developed by many people including Apple who use if for their browser Safari.  In my opinion though the best browser out there and one that supports the latest in web standards and allows for serious customization, Firefox.

Power Up Foundation

Posted by ryan as Design, Portfolio, Web Devlopment

We recently launched a new website called Power Up Foundation. I am very pleased with the way this came out and I am sure it will continue to evolve over time. The top bar only has a small flicker of progress as we just launched the site, but there are many versions of the animation at the top that will change as funds are raised for their cause. As the success of the campaign continues the site will become a great deal more colorful.

A.A. Boos Website Launch

Posted by ryan as Advertising, Career, Design, Interweb, Portfolio, Web Devlopment

We recently launched a new site for a local contractor. To quote the actual website

“A. A. Boos & Sons, Inc. is a full service Union General Contractor with our own combined skilled labor force, 150 field employees, consisting of bricklayers, cement finishers, ironworkers, operating engineers, laborers; servicing our clients in Ohio, Michigan and other states.”

Its a great site with a smooth vibe. I am happy with the direction this project was lucky to go in.

Excuse The Mess

Posted by ryan as Design, Interweb, Web Devlopment, ryanshull.com

Please excuse the mess I’ve been creating here on my site. I’m trying to update it a little bit at a time. As I replace the old theme with reworked template sections you will see this whole site come together. I have to do it this way so that I can get things done and up. Usually I’ll start working a theme (for myself) and stop half way to start over. This keeps my site uncool, never fresh, and never good enough by my own tastes. Often a personal site is the most neglected, at least this way I can update it in peices when the time permits. When I finally have it complete I’m sure I’ll be ready to start on the redesign. Oh so it goes.

Microsoft Not Ready For Web Standards

Posted by ryan as Bummer, Interweb, Web Devlopment

Gizomodo reports that Microsoft’s IE 8 is still not making it happen when it comes to browser compatibility. Here is the list on Gizmodo of site’s that are having to rely on IE8’s old rendering style, aka not web standard compliant.

microsoft.com
google.com
yahoo.com
cctv.com
msn.com.cn
live.com (a Microsoft site)
wikipedia.org
flickr.com
wordpress.com
adobe.com
facebook.com
apple.com
youtube.com
imdb.com
thepiratebay.org
dell.com
netflix.com
nytimes.com
gizmodo.com (In case you’re wondering why you have problems in IE at Giz)
kotaku.com
sony.com

Now if it didn’t register with you that most of the big dogs are on this list, it needs to be pointed out that their own site is on the top of the list. More of the same from the IE camp. And I got all excited and what not half a year ago about the prospects of not having to develop a special version of each site for IE users. :(
